{"id":4376,"date":"2019-07-21T23:51:13","date_gmt":"2019-07-22T03:51:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rightoncanada.ca\/?p=4376"},"modified":"2019-07-21T23:51:13","modified_gmt":"2019-07-22T03:51:13","slug":"canadian-government-challenged-to-support-un-ban-on-exporting-wastes-to-developing-countries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rightoncanada.ca\/?p=4376","title":{"rendered":"Canadian government challenged to support UN ban on exporting wastes to developing countries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kathleen Ruff, RightOnCanada.ca<\/p>\n<p>Most Canadians are not aware that the Canadian government is opposing a UN ban on the export of wastes to developing countries.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/rightoncanada.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Letter-to-Minister-McKenna-17-July-2019.pdf\">letter<\/a> sent to Canada&#8217;s Environment Minister, Catherine McKenna, international and Canadian environmental organisations are challenging the Canadian government to cease its opposition and support the UN ban.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/garbage-pan-plastics-basel-1.5218031\"><strong>As Cambodia complains about trash exports, environmentalists urge Canada to ban practice<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nanos.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/2019-1443A-CTV-May-Recycling-Populated-report-with-tabs.pdf\">opinion poll<\/a> shows that 79% of Canadians think Canada should stop shipping its wastes overseas to developing countries.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Environmental groups in the Philippines, Cambodia and Malaysia are rightfully upset that Canada is treating their countries like a garbage dump.
