Below is an Open Appeal, sent to Dr. Kellie Leitch, by over two hundred medical experts , health advocates and asbestos victims, calling on her to stop supporting asbestos. Leitch is a medical doctor and an Associate Professor at the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine. She is a Member of Parliament and supports the pro-asbestos policy of the Canadian government.
The letter is also available here as a pdf.

Dr Kellie Leitch, MD, MBA, FRCS (C), MP
House of Commons
Ottawa, Ontario
Dear Dr Leitch:
As medical doctors and public health professionals, we call on you to support the Canadian Medical Association, the Canadian Cancer Society, the Canadian Public Health Association and the World Health Organization, who have called for a stop to the use of any asbestos in order to eliminate asbestos-related disease and death.
As a medical doctor, you have a professional and ethical duty to put the protection of health ahead of any other consideration.
The pro-asbestos position that you are presently supporting is the policy of the asbestos industry’s lobby organisation (the Chrysotile Institute). The Institute claims that exposure to high levels of chrysotile asbestos (1f/cc) causes no harm to health. It pretends that chrysotile asbestos is a wonderful product that can be safely used in developing countries.
As you perhaps know, chrysotile asbestos represents 100% of the global asbestos trade and represents 95% of all asbestos ever sold for a hundred years. The scientific evidence is indisputable that chrysotile asbestos is causes mesothelioma, lung and other cancers, and asbestosis.
As we are sure you will agree, the asbestos lobby group has zero scientific or medical credibility. As a medical doctor, you have a profound professional and ethical duty to be guided by reputable science and not by the deadly misinformation of the asbestos lobby.
We congratulate you for the prestigious awards you have won in recognition of your leadership to promote public health, particularly the health of children.
We respectfully point out that it is incompatible to show leadership for the health of Canadian children and at the same time, to support a policy that causes harm to children in the developing world by placing asbestos in their homes and schools, particularly since no regulatory oversight is in place in these countries to protect people from asbestos harm once the asbestos is out in the community.
The contrast with the millions of dollars we are spending to remove asbestos from Canadian buildings and schools – including your own work place, the House of Commons – in order to protect the lives of Canadians, represents an indefensible double standard.
We understand that doing the right thing may run counter to your political interests. However, your ethical code of conduct as a medical doctor requires that you put the
protection of health ahead of personal advantage, no matter what the circumstance. We would appreciate receiving your immediate response on this crucial, ethical question and deeply hope that you will be true to your ethical code of conduct.
Sincerely,
Dr Fernand Turcotte, MD, MPH, FRCPC, Professor Emeritus of Public Health and
Preventive Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Université Laval, Québec
