Basel Convention

On October 26, 2020, the Canadian government signed a Bilateral Arrangement with the United States regarding the export and import of plastic wastes.

In a letter sent to Environment Minister Jonathan Wilkinson on December 2, 2020, Canadian and international environmental organisations call on the Minister to make the Arrangement public and express their serious concerns that the Arrangement violates the new Basel Convention amendments on plastic wastes, which become international law on January 1, 2021 and which the Canadian government has promised to ratify but has not yet done so.

The United States is one of very few countries that have not ratified the Basel Convention. 188 countries have ratified the Convention.
